E-Lab is a startup that aims at eradicating electronic waste in Nairobi, Kenya—a rather new environmental problem due to Africa's exponential growth of the number of mobile phone users and electronics over the last couple of years as well as to promote a culture of safe and responsible e-waste disposal among Kenyans. E-Lab transforms this hazardous e-waste into innovative products—including art pieces and sculptures for the art industry, jewelry and shoes made from rubber and recycled plastic found in electronic devices for the fashion industry and “juakali” or metallic money boxes from copper and other metals. Alongside mopping up hazardous electronic waste for a cleaner and safer society, E-Lab would keep diseases like cancer in check and would also help curb unemployment which is a major socio-economic challenge in Africa.
